Content and Structure
The programme is offered in four semesters:
- The programme comprises sixteen courses, including coursework and dissertation or educational development project equivalent to four courses.
- The coursework includes seven core courses which are compulsory. The other five courses comprise courses in the selected area of specialization and one elective.
- For the award of a degree in a particular area of specialization, a CP must study an equivalent of eight courses in his/her selected area of specialization, including the dissertation/educational development project.
- CPs will select their area of specialization in Semester-1 of Year One of the programme. This specialization will continue in Semester-2. Additionally, they will select one course as an 'elective' from a variety of courses offered in Semester-1 of Year Two.
- Academic Literacy will be offered during the first three semesters of the MEd Programme (see Attachment VII). The aim of this course is to develop students' higher-order critical thinking skills and academic English.
The dissertation or educational development project will be equivalent to four courses in the selected area of specialisation. The dissertation, ranging from 15,000 to 18,000 words, will be based on a research investigation in schools or any educational setting (see Dissertation Guide). The educational development project, to be reported in a project report of 8,000 to 10,000 words, will focus on developing CPs' skills of application and integration of knowledge through engaging in a school-based development activity (e.g., teacher professional development, design ing and developing materials for innovative pedagogy in the classroom or curriculum development). While the dissertation option will enable the course participants to undertake a research study, the project option will enable them to undertake needs assessment and introduce interventions in schools during the field work.
